Best for: Grades 1–4

Digit vs. value

In 4,738 the digit 7 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 700. Separating the digit from its value is the key idea behind regrouping, rounding and multi-digit arithmetic.

Choosing the number size

Use “Largest number” to set how many digits appear: 99 for first grade, 999 for second, 9,999 for third and up to 9,999,999 for fourth grade and beyond.

Make it a timed challenge

Put a visual classroom timer on the board and see how many problems students can finish before the time runs out. Print a new version tomorrow and try to beat the score.
