Best for: Grades 4–6

Like denominators first

When the bottom numbers match, just add or subtract the tops: 2/7 + 3/7 = 5/7. About half the problems on each sheet use like denominators so students can warm up.

Then unlike denominators

Find a common denominator, rewrite both fractions, then add or subtract. Remind students to simplify at the end.

Control the difficulty

“Largest number” sets the biggest denominator. Use 6 for a gentle start and 12 for a challenge.

Make it a timed challenge

Put a visual classroom timer on the board and see how many problems students can finish before the time runs out. Print a new version tomorrow and try to beat the score.
