Why three lines?
The top line shows how tall capital and tall letters should be, the dashed midline shows the height of small letters, and the baseline is where every letter sits. Letters with tails — g, j, p, q and y — dip below the baseline into the space underneath.
Pick the right size
Children write much larger than adults at first. Start with 1 inch or 3/4 inch lines and move to smaller paper only when letters fit comfortably. Mixing sizes in one week is fine — larger for new letters, smaller for review.
