Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down

Long division is the same four steps repeated. Many classrooms use the memory trick “Does McDonald’s Sell Burgers?” — Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down — and then check whether there is anything left to bring down.

Building up step by step

Start with answers between 10 and 99 and divisors up to 5, without remainders. Then raise the largest divisor to 9, turn on remainders, and finally push the answers into the hundreds and thousands.

Plenty of working space

Each problem gets its own box with space below the bracket, so students can write each subtraction step neatly instead of squeezing it into the margin.

Make it a timed challenge

Put a visual classroom timer on the board and see how many problems students can finish before the time runs out. Print a new version tomorrow and try to beat the score.
