Teach telling time step by step
- O'clock — focus on the short hour hand while the long hand points straight up.
- Half past — the minute hand points to the 6, and the hour hand sits halfway between two numbers.
- Quarter past and quarter to — the minute hand points to the 3 or the 9.
- Five-minute intervals — count by fives around the clock. Turn on the minute numbers to help.
- To the minute — count on from the nearest five.
Three kinds of clock practice
Read the clock asks kids to write the time shown. Draw the hands works the other way round and quickly shows whether they understand the difference between the hour and minute hands. Time in words builds the language — “half past 4”, “quarter to 9” — that children hear every day. Mix them up for a well-rounded review.
Practice on a real clock first
Before the worksheet, let children move the hands themselves on an interactive teaching clock. Seeing the hour hand creep forward as the minute hand goes around makes the half-past and quarter-to positions click.
Which grade learns what?
