Why fact families help

Fact families show that addition and subtraction (and multiplication and division) are inverse operations. A child who knows 3 + 5 = 8 also knows 8 − 5 = 3 — four facts for the price of one.

Addition or multiplication

With the smallest number set to 0 or 1 you get addition and subtraction families. Set the smallest number to 2 or more to mix in multiplication and division families.

Make it a timed challenge

Put a visual classroom timer on the board and see how many problems students can finish before the time runs out. Print a new version tomorrow and try to beat the score.
