Learning to write numbers

Writing digits uses the same fine-motor skills as writing letters, and many children reverse numbers like 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 at first. Tracing gives them the correct shape to follow until the movement becomes automatic.

A simple progression

  1. 0–5 in extra large gray numbers.
  2. 6–10, then the whole set 0–10.
  3. Teen numbers 11–20, with number words.
  4. Switch to dotted numbers and a smaller size.

Pair it with a hundreds chart to connect writing numbers with counting.
